Bailee Campbell hit a walk-off home run to end one game and made a dazzling defense play at second base in the other, while teammates Brooklyn Goehring had a monster day at the plate Allen Community College's sweep of Highland
Allen Community College?s Killer B?s created quite the buzz on the softball diamond Wednesday.
Brooklyn Goehring and Bailee Campbell, Allen?s starting shortstop and second baseman, respectively, keyed a dramatic come-from-behind victory over visiting Highland.
Goehring?s RBI triple in the bottom of the seventh erased a 4-3 deficit. Then with two outs, Campbell ended the affair by blasting a 2-1 pitch over the center field fence for a walk-off 6-4 victory.
But they weren?t done by a long shot.
In Game 2 of their doubleheader, Goehring went 4-for-4, a single, triple and two doubles, while Campbell made a highlight reel defensive play to end a Highland rally in the top of the fifth, diving to her right to field a ground ball and throw out the runner at first. Had the ball gotten through, Highland likely would have tied the score at 4-4.
Instead, it stayed 4-2 before Allen tacked on one more run in the fifth and four in the sixth of a 9-2 victory.
The sweep gives the Red Devils another momentum boost and evens their Jayhawk Conference record at 6-6 headed into the final two weeks of the regular season.
?It was a good day, a fun day,? Allen head coach Nicole Peters said. ?Everybody played well and did their role. It worked out perfectly.?
Red Devil starting pitcher Camrynn Yardley was locked in a duel with Highland hurdler Makenzie Leake through the early going of the opener. The Scotties struck first with two out doubles in both the third and fourth innings to take a 3-0 lead.
Allen left two runners on base in the fourth before finally breaking through in the fifth on Morgan Collins?s RBI single to drive in Yardley. Yardley then aided her own cause with a two-run double in the bottom of the sixth to tie the score at 3-3.
But an Allen error and single by Meg McCallum put runners on first and third for Highland with nobody out in the top of the seventh. Yardley induced a ground-out to the next batter, and a run scored to push the Scotties back on top, 4-3.
Kylar Smith started the Red Devil rally in the bottom of the inning after she reached on an error.
Goehring smoked a hard grounder that rolled to the fence, bringing home Smith, setting the stage for Campbell?s two-out blast to end the game.
Yardley struck out seven in her complete game victory. She surrendered five hits.
Allen was limited to six hits, Campbell?s home run, Goehring?s triple, Yardley?s double and singles from Hayley Gerberding, Jena Hendrix and Collins.
THE SCOTTIES got an early jump in Game 2 with three straight two-out singles to lead, 2-0.
The rest was all Allen. Goehring tripled and scored on a passed ball to pull Allen to within 2-1.
Abby Marsh singled to lead off the second, where she scored on Collins? sac fly to even the score in the bottom of the first. Goehring followed with a single. She then stole and never stopped until she scored because of an errant throw from Highland?s catcher.
There?s more.
Goehring came within inches of hitting for the cycle in the bottom of the fourth. Her drive to center bounced high off the wall, turning a would-be home run into a double, which still was good enough to score Collins for a 4-2 advantage.
Highland threatened but came up empty in the fifth, thanks to Goehring?s web gem.
Madisyn Havenstein pushed Allen?s lead to 5-2 with a solo home run in the fifth. Goehring added to the fun with an RBI double in the bottom of the sixth. Gerberding followed with a two-run single before Marsh walked with the bases loaded for the final run.
?Abby did a nice job of keeping them off balance,? Peters said.
Marsh limited Highland to five hits over seven innings with no walks and one strikeout.
Goehring?s four hits accounted for two RBIs and two runs scored. Havenstein had a home run, Kaitlyn Miller chipped in with a double, and Gerberding, Marsh and Bethany Gould all had singles.
Allen, 15-21, travels to Neosho County Saturday.
